Nachdem wir euch letzte Woche einen kleinen Überblick über das politische Szenario in Kenia dargestellt haben, möchten wir uns heute ein bisschen auf die wirtschaftliche Seite fokussieren.
Nicht nur politisch, sondern auch wirtschaftlich, ist Kenia eine treibende Kraft in Ostafrika. Im Vergleich zu anderen ostafrikanischen Ländern wächst die Wirtschaft überdurchschnittlich zwischen 4-6%. Die Landwirtschaft ist mit Abstand der wichtigste Wirtschaftszweig und Arbeitgeber. Er repräsentiert mehr als 25% des Bruttoinlandsproduktes (Vergleich Deutschland: 0,7%). Der Tiefseehafen Mombasas verbindet Kenia mit dem globalen Welthandel, wobei Tee und Schnittblumen mit 32% die Hauptexportgüter darstellen. Der Klimawandel, sowie die COVID-19 Pandemie, sind allerdings auch in Kenia spürbar und beeinträchtigen die landwirtschaftliche Produktion, sowie die Nachfrage nach kenianischen Gütern. Eine politische, sowie wirtschaftliche Herausforderung ist der hohe Bevölkerungsanteil, der in extremer Armut lebt (Weniger als $1,9 pro Tag), sowie eine hohe Jugendarbeitslosigkeit.

After we provided you a brief overview of the political scenario in Kenya last week, today we would like to focus a bit on the economic side. Kenya is a driving force in East Africa, not only politically but also economically. Compared to other East African countries, the economy is growing at an above-average rate of between 4-6%. Agriculture is by far the most important economic sector and employer. It represents more than 25% of the gross domestic product (comparison Germany: 0.7%). The deep-sea port of Mombasa connects Kenya with the global world trade. Tea and cut flowers are the main export goods with 32%. However, climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic are also noticeable in Kenya, affecting agricultural production and the demand for Kenyan goods. A political as well as economic challenge is the high percentage of the population living in extreme poverty (less than $1.9 per day) and a high youth unemployment rate.
