Heute wollen wir euch einen Eindruck der Lebenserhaltungskosten in Kenia geben. Die Währung in Kenia ist der Kenianische Schilling. Umgerechnet entspricht ein Euro etwa 129 Kenianischen Schilling. Auf dem Markt kostet ein Kilo Reis ca. 1,15 Euro, ein Liter Milch ca. 70 Cent und 12 Eier ungefähr 1,30 Euro. Eine Einzelfahrkarte im ÖPNV kostet ungefähr 80 Cent und eine Marken-Jeans ca. 19 Euro.
Es ist also alles ein wenig günstiger als hierzulande, jedoch beträgt das durchschnittliche Nettomonatseinkommen in Kenia auch nur 330 Euro, weshalb es für viele Kenianer*innen schwierig ist, über die Runden zu kommen.
Die Monatsmiete des Heart Children’s Home beträgt 140 Euro. Hinzukommen Strom- und Wasserkosten von jeweils 77 Euro.
Mit dem Geld, das Zukunftswaisend jeden Monat sammelt, konnten diese Kosten in den vergangenen Monaten gut gedeckt werden.
Mit den 5 Euro des monatlichen Mitgliedsbeitrages lassen sich beispielsweise 6 Packungen Ugali (Maismehlbrei) a 2 Kilo, ein Arztbesuch inklusive Medikamenten bei einer Grippe oder die monatlichen Schulgebühren für ein Kind der 7./8. Klasse oder für drei Kinder in Klasse 1-6 finanzieren.

Everyday living costs in Kenia
Today we want to give you an impression of the everyday living costs in Kenia. Kenia’s currency is the Kenyan shilling. One euro equals about 129 Kenyan shilling. On the market one kilo rice costs about 1.15 euros, a liter of milk about 70 cents and 12 eggs around 1.30 euros. You can get a one-way ticket in public transport for approximately 80 cents and a branded jeans for about 19 euros. Although the prices are a bit lower than in Germany, the average monthly income in Kenia lies around 330 euros. Thus, many Kenyans struggle to scratch along.
The monthly rent of Heart Children’s Home are 140 euros. Additionally, there 77 euros to pay for each: energy and water supply. Furthermore, a mattress costs around 19 euros. With the money Zukunftswaisend collects each month, these costs could be covered well the last months.
With our monthly membership fee of 5 euros you could finance 6 2-kilo-packs of Ugali (mush), a doctor’s visit including medication for a flu or the monthly school costs for a child in 7th/8th grade or three children in grade 1-6.
